Fire and Burn Safety Essentials

Fire and Burn Safety Essentials!

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, and replace batteries yearly.
  • Make and practice a fire escape plan with at least two ways out of every room.
  • Store matches and lighters in locked cabinets. Teach your child to never touch them.
  • Make the stove area a "Kid-Free Zone". Three feet is a good distance.
  • Never leave the kitchen unattended while cooking.
  • Place space heaters at least three feet from anything that can catch fire.
  • Set your water heater to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

KUED Ready-To-Learn

KUED Ready-To-Learn is a workshop that channel 7 offers to help parents learn how to use TV as a teaching tool. (Lots of parenting ideas and always a free book and pizza)!  Watch for flyers in your area. There is no workshop in December.  Our kid goes to Head Start, which is where we learned of this and we thought it would be nice to share with others.

The Attitude of Gratitude!

When life gets hectic and you begin to feel overwhelmed, take a moment to focus on the people and things you are grateful for in life.

Sit down with your kids and start thinking of things that make you smile or that make you down right happy.  If you can't think of anything, start small. You can be thankful for forks or bathtubs, silly pets, sunny days, crackling leaves, bubbles, a clean kitchen.

One of the most impressive reasons for being grateful is the positive impact on the way you think and feel. Research shows that grateful people are more alert, and have higher levels of enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness and energy.

Besides all of that, it's just a fun thing to do. You can make a "Gratitude Journal" by stapling a few sheets of paper together. Have your kids draw things on the cover page. You can write in your "journal" all at one time or it could become a before-bed ritual.
