Scientist creates lifelike cells out of metal | MNN - Mother Nature Network:

This is an excellent first step. If we can learn how to create functional cells, we may have the first step towards an organic technology that will permit us to do things like making self regenerating space craft for space exploration or self healing domes on other planets that do not have Earth-like atmospheres. It would also be nice if we could figure out how to create a self renewal energy cell where you could feed it material froms space or on other planets that are common place to produce energy that we need to survive. Of course, it will also be one step further in understanding life. The Supreme Architect of the Universe made many things, but I am willing to bet that Carbon-based life forms are not the only form of life in existence. Goes to truly show the vast scale of our creator and the infinite diversity in infinite combinations that make life really fascinating. Now, if we could create peace and prosperity for all then we will have made a vast step forward.
